Finds 1: Educational Nostalgia
Finds 1: Educational Nostalgia
For this first finds assignment, I created a picture of myself as a nostalgic, home town girl, who is very much connected to school and academic work. My finds center around ways in which my memories connect to my academic work. Although there are not many images that make this connection explicit, the juxtaposition of personal images from the past and present show a focus both on history and on academic work.
Ziggy is my guardian angel
Ziggy is my guardian angel

I have a ziggy mirror that my aunt gave me on the wall of my apartment. It has been on the wall of every place I have lived since I got it as a kid in Sharpsburg. I first liked the mirror because my aunt had a bird named Cyggy (short for Cygnus, the god of ballance--see Rush "Hemispheres"), but I thought his name was Ziggy. Thus, the mirror reminded me both of my aunt (the coolest person I knew) and her cockatiel (the coolest bird I knew). As Ziggy has been with me since childhood, it stands to reason that, as I lay looking up at Ziggy offering me a smile and some daisies at the completion of my qualfying portfolio, I realized that Ziggy was my guardian angel. Llike those pictures of Jesus that my Aunt Dot has all over her kitchen, Ziggy had hung there, ever-watchful and silently encouraging me on my work to finish my papers. Ziggy being in therapy questioning reality in this cartoon is represents the work I was doing with realativity and value judgements in my qualifying paper.
