Finds 2
Finds 2
For this assignment I found photo ops. from my life. I chose to arrange them chronologically in an attempt to examine how opportunities for photographs changes as I grow older. Many of the earlier photographs in this entry are more formal- posed portraits taken by a profesional photographer-whereas finds representing more present day are more informal. Like all photographs, each image tells an immediate and a distant story about a time in my life. That is, while each image reminds me of the time it was taken, the events that couch it, and the experience it captures, each image is also loaded with information about American culture, relationships, and customs as represented by one person's experience.

me and mom in el paso
me and mom in el paso

This picture was taken just before my mom, dad, and a 6 week old baby me took off from Texas to head to Pittsburgh. Both of my parents were from Pittsburgh, and had moved to Fort Bliss Army Base in El Paso after a stint in Alabama and then Korea. I remember looking at this picture and realizing that I am older than my mother was then. Although it isn't formal, this photograph makes me think of the differences between my mother at 21 (in picture) and me at the same age. I am (at 26) not married, have no children, but I have a BA, MA and am a PhD candidate. I have not nurtured babys, but I have cared for and pruned countless sentences into papers. Our lives are very different; time has changed the role of a 21 year old woman.
